Oversimplifying a complex topic: I personally use the "flourishing test". If the cultural construct taken-as-a-whole leads to flourishing for person-in-her-environment, I'll buy in. If the construct taken as a whole leads to stifling of flourishing, I won't buy in. I realize I'm begging the question by switching to the vague concept of flourishing--but that helps me look at something like caning or exorcism or the burkha through the lens of working well for the people involved without getting caught up in politics.
